Why are your teeth discolored ?
The tooth enamel comes in different shades, meaning your teeth may naturally have a darker hue than someone else’s. Over time, the color of the enamel changes and becomes stained, due to the fact that enamel contains miniature pores that absorb pigment and stain. Some causes of dark tooth color may be:
- Illnesses
- Aging
- Medications
- Use of tobacco (smoking or chewing)
- Heavily pigmented foods such as coffee, black tea, red wine and berries
- Getting too much fluoride when teeth are developing
In case you have stained or discolored teeth due to any of the reasons above, you can seek professional teeth whitening from Smiles on Queen Dentistry.
Teeth whitening options – which is best?
When you visit Smiles on Queen for teeth whitening, your dentist will go over a few popular options. The first is the use of whitening toothpastes, which act by removing the stains or discolorations only on the surface of the teeth. These are mildly to moderately abrasive whiteners that have a polishing effect and can be purchased at most pharmacies.
Many of them don’t have lasting side-effects, but they also have a limited ability to whiten the teeth due to their limited ability to permeate the enamel. In patients who have very sensitive or eroded teeth, this may not be an ideal option, as the abrasive nature of the paste may worsen the condition.
At-home use whitening kits
Your dentist may give you an at-home teeth-whitening kit that is normally applied with a tray, strips or a brush. Most of these at-home teeth whiteners contain clinical levels of either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which effectively lighten the enamel by dissolving stains within the enamel structure. Because you are receiving the kit from a dental professional, the concentration of the active ingredients will be several times higher than what you will find at pharmacies. We may recommend a special whitening tray for the upper and lower teeth which you will need to wear at night or during the day.
In-office teeth whitening procedures
If you need deep whitening of your teeth, we can perform an in-house whitening procedure at the dental office. A stronger concentration of whitener is used to bleach through your enamel and leave you with an immediately whiter smile. This procedure usually takes an hour or less. The dentist will first cover your gum tissue with a thin sheet of rubber or a protective gel to prevent irritation, before applying the whitener to your teeth and allowing it time to work.

Are you a good candidate for teeth whitening?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening is not for everyone. For some people, the procedure can cause more harm than good. For instance, if you have active gum disease or very irritated gums, whitening can cause further irritation and redness.
If you have tooth decay, we recommend seeking treatment first before going for the whitening procedure, as once whitening is done, any fillings and bonding cannot be done for a few months afterwards.
Talk to us at Smiles on Queen about your tooth whitening procedure. We’ll perform an oral exam to determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening.
