Tips for Oral Care

during Pregnancy

Pregnancy will cause many changes in hormones. With these many changes, it gets easier to develop a wide range of dental diseases. This is due to the fact that the change in your chemistry will also affect the mouth and create conditions that are favorable for bacteria to thrive. Evidence has shown that gum disease while pregnant can affect the overall condition of your baby. The risks include giving early or giving birth to a lighter or smaller baby. Studies have further shown that gum diseases cause the increase of biological fluids which can trigger labor. When the condition worsens, it can affect the health of an unborn baby. These risks are what makes it important to take extra care as regards dental health when pregnant.

Common dental problems when pregnant

While pregnant, you will face the risk of 3 dental conditions: dry mouth, enamel erosion, and gum disease. Dry mouth is brought by an increase in acidity which comes from morning sickness and the increase in the body’s demand for fluids. Failing to your month after nausea will increase the risk of enamel erosion. This happens due to the pile-up of the acidic content.

Prenatal dental care

Prenatal oral care must start long before you even get pregnant. If you plan on becoming pregnant or are pregnant, it is important that you visit your Nobleton dentist for advice on dental care. To start with, the dentist will do a complete mouth checkup. The dentist evaluates the health of your teeth and gums. You will then get professional dental cleaning services. This will set the base of your oral care during the pregnancy period.

In prenatal oral care, all the urgent procedures need to be done before you become pregnant. Elective procedures can be undertaken at a later date. If you are several weeks into pregnancy, you need to talk to an obstetrician. The obstetrician will enlighten you on the precautions you have to take.
