Your dentist will also advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques to maintain optimal home care between visits. Different types of teeth cleaning
Teeth cleaning can be done in different ways depending on the patient’s needs. Some people assume that when teeth cleaning is done, the dental professionals only focus on polishing the tooth enamel above the gum line,but there is more to cleaning than just that!
At Smiles on Queen, we select the type and frequency of teeth cleaning procedure based on the patient’s unique needs. We perform a physical evaluation, and in some cases x-rays before recommending the best dental cleaning procedure.
Thorough cleaning above and below the gumline is performed using ultrasonic and hand-scaling instruments to scale and/or plane the teeth surface. In some cases of advanced gum disease, other treatment modalities may be considered in addition to cleaning.
Prophylaxis cleaning, or prophy, is done to get rid of plaque and stains that have buildup just above the gum line, and often performed after scaling. This procedure is not designed to remove plaque below the gum line, but more of a final touch to polish the teeth for a “squeaky clean” feel!
