Serving Bolton & Caledon for orthodontic treatment

Orthodontics will not only help to give you a more attractive smile, but can also help to:

  • Prevent tooth decay, by alleviating crowding and plaque traps
  • Prevent gum diseases
  • Improve speech, if malalignments are causing speech impediments
  • Improve chewing ability
  • Prevent abnormal wear of the enamel due to bite problems
  • Prevent jaw problems due to imbalanced biting
  • Prevent tooth loss as a result of any of the above etiologies

Orthodontics works by applying gentle and constant pressure on the teeth to allow your teeth to drift through the bone and align into the correct position. Realignment of teeth can be done through various orthodontic tools; for example, using braces, which are small brackets that are cemented to the teeth, along wires that are tightened regularly to make the teeth shift to the desired position.

Today, other orthodontic treatments are also available that are more comfortable and offer equally long-lasting results. We use fixed as well as removable appliances to correct dental problems such as spacing, crowding, overbites, etc. The modern appliances used in orthodontics include aligners, space maintainers, removable retainers and habit breakers.

We offer orthodontics for children

Addressing dental issues like bite problems, spacing and crowding from a you age is important. In fact, when orthodontic problems are addressed earlier in life, they are more likely to be effective at solving alignment problems. Children are often screened from ages 7 to 8. Although treatment is not always started at this stage, your dentist may recommend the best solution and orthodontics for children.

It is important to maintain great oral hygiene habits before and after orthodontic treatment. If equipment such as braces are placed, you will be advised by the dentist to ensure that they remain clean and well taken care of. Failure to do this can create room for bacteria to thrive. You may even suffer from gum disease when the equipment placed in your mouth is not well-taken care of.

If you have a gingivitis, periodontal disease or cavities, we strongly recommend treatment before orthodontic procedures are done.

Remember that orthodontics is designed to resolve issues like bite problems and alignment so other dental conditions need to be diagnosed and addressed before you can have aligners or braces placed in your mouth. When you visit us at Smiles on Queen, we will evaluate your dental needs and determine if you are a good candidate for braces, Invisalign or any other orthodontic treatment depending on your age and dental needs.
