Even if you don’t think the tooth is badly broken, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible to evaluate the condition. Your neighboring teeth and surrounding gums may have also suffered trauma in the process. Save yourself the pain by seeking dental intervention as soon as possible. Our experienced dentists have been able to save injured teeth when approached at the right time.

What to do when you break a tooth

Dental emergencies or injuries happen when you least expect it. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do at home when your tooth is broken. You still have to see a dentist to have it fixed. As you prepare to visit the dental clinic, take the steps below when your tooth breaks.

  • If you notice bleeding, use a piece of gauze to apply gentle pressure on the area until the bleeding subsides.
  • If you are in pain or the area is swollen, use a cold pack on your lips or cheek. Never apply the cold pack directly on the tooth or gums.
  • Look out for symptoms such as pain when you bite food
  • Avoid touching the root surface of the knocked-out tooth since it can be damaged easily
  • Do not scrub or use chemicals to clean the area where the tooth is broken.
  • Do not, under any circumstances, use superglue or other non-medical media to glue the tooth back.
  • If the tooth has completely come out from the socket, keep it in a moist and warm medium, such as in your cheek or a glass of milk, and seek dental attention immediately.

What to expect

When you visit our dental clinic, the treatment given for a broken tooth will depend on the situation at hand. The dentist will begin by performing a thorough examination. You may need a tooth-colored filling to replace the broken piece if the tooth is fractured or chipped.

If the broken part is big, your dentist may recommend placing an artificial crown or cap to restore your smile. If the tooth is dislodged, it can be repositioned, or a root canal treatment will be performed to make sure no infection develops after the trauma.
