Tips for Choosing

the Right Toothbrush

Using the correct toothbrush is at the center of every dental care plan. A toothbrush is the most widely available dental care tool. Early civilizations in Egypt, Babylon, and Mesopotamia were already using frayed twigs to brush their teeth as early as 3500BC. The Chinese invented the chewing brush and they were the first to invent bristled toothbrushes as early as the 15th century. Toothbrushes have evolved a lot over the years from the brushes with horse hair to electric toothbrushes of today.

The main challenge today when deciding on the toothbrush to purchase is not the construction materials but rather the design. There are numerous factors you have to consider when shopping for a brush. The wrong brush can keep you from brushing effectively and also harm your gums. Here are vital considerations you need to make when shopping for a toothbrush.

Size

The size of your toothbrush’s head will determine comfort when brushing. You need a toothbrush that is easy to use in accessing such areas as behind your molars. It should also not be too small else its effectiveness will be impeded. The recommended brush size for adults is a half inch wide and an inch long.

The texture of the bristles

You will find three options when it comes to the textures; soft, medium and hard. Soft bristles are recommended by Nobleton dentists because they are safe and comfortable. Harder bristles can erode the enamel and hurt the gums.

Recommended toothbrushes

If you have dental conditions such as tooth sensitivity, you need to talk to your dentist about the best toothbrush for you.

Manual versus electric toothbrush

When shopping around for the right toothbrush, you will come across the electric toothbrush. There are many affordable models of the electric toothbrushes that you will find out there. Taking a look at user reviews will help determine which toothbrush will work best for you. Even though the final choice is about personal preferences if you are torn between an electric and a manual toothbrush, understanding the pros and cons of each will help make a more informed choice.

Electric toothbrush

Pros

  • Easy to access harder to reach areas
  • Less effort
  • Has a built in timer that will help you know you have met the recommended brushing duration.
  • Idea for people with limited mobility of their hands

Cons

  • It is expensive
  • Charging is required
  • Breaks easily than the manual toothbrush

Manual toothbrush

This is the most popular toothbrush. You most likely own one.

Pros

  • No need for charging or changing the batteries
  • Inexpensive
  • Available in many designs and styles

Cons

  • Has no timer
  • More effort is needed

The toothbrush you end up picking will depend mostly on personal choice. The most important things to consider, regardless of the toothbrush you want to buy, are the brush size and the texture of the bristles. Go for tender bristles irrespective of how hard you consider your teeth to be.

I am beyond grateful to the staff at the Smiles On Queen. I until the past 6 months had allowed my health and especially my dental health to rapidly decline. I had avoided the dentist for close to a decade and had a lot of fear, shame and embarrassment regarding the state of my teeth. From the moment I entered the office and furthermore on my call to book my appointment I was met with a degree of compassion and understanding that quite honestly has left me overwhelmed. The care, patience and expertise of the hygienist was extraordinary. Additionally the receptionist was equally as kind and understanding. Thank you - you have done so much for my self esteem - I can smile again without having to worry about the appearance of my teeth. I would highly recommend this office to anyone.

I was referred to this office by a friend because they offer IV sedation. I was very anxious at the dentist before but I was able to remove my wisdom teeth and I did not feel pain or discomfort. The dentist Dr. Lawrence was confident and told me what I was to expect afterward in terms of minor swelling and they also told me to come back if I have any problems but I am fine and happy. Overall I am happy this office was able to see me and they are great.

This dental office is staffed with some of the best people you will ever meet. First of all I would like to say that I’m really afraid dentists (I think its dentistophobia 😊), I've been to over 5 different ones with the same negative results from all. My mother is a cancer survivor and suggested that I check out her dental office...so I did. I was greeted by a team of fantastic people concerned with nothing but my well being. These people are angels sent here to help others in a time of difficulty, it is, honestly an absolutely amazing place.

This was by far one of the best dental experiences I've ever had. I have a huge fear of the dentist and was open about my fears upon arrival. Dr. Norsen was kind, caring and catered to my needs and phobia. I 100% recommend this dental facility. I also felt nothing while receiving my fillings and I'm very hard to freeze and had a lot of work that needed to be done. Over all an awesome experience for the dentist.
