What to expect during the procedure
Your dentist will begin by preparing the tooth and taking an impression of your teeth, which gets sent to the lab for crown fabrication. Until the delivery of the final crown, a temporary crown will be made and inserted. The color of the final crown can either be selected chairside or custom matched at the lab. At a quick second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, and the final crown will be fitted and inserted.
Maintenance
As with any dental restoration, proper care and maintenance is crucial for the longevity of your crown. A tooth that has been crowned should be cared for just like any other tooth, with regular check-up, dental cleanings, and home hygiene. Just because it is crowned does not mean it can not get cavities or gum disease! In addition, patients with parafunctional habits such as bruxism (teeth grinding) may experience issues such as accelerated wear or more frequent cement debonding of the crown. A night-guard may be recommended to protect your dentition and new restorations.
