What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are like custom-made caps that are placed over the tooth. They can be placed for cosmetic reasons or to protect the underlying teeth, improving your teeth’s contours, color, function and durability. Options for beautiful, natural tooth colored crowns from Smiles on Queen will help to improve your teeth’s overall appearance and function.

When to have a dental crown?

At Smiles on Queen, we may recommend dental crowns after certain dental procedures, such as root canal treatment, or when a tooth is heavily broken or decayed, and has become too weak for a filling to be done.

Smiles on Queen dentists may recommend dental crowns if you have any of the following situations:

  • Heavily decayed teeth
  • Heavily restored or broken teeth
  • Root canal treated teeth
  • Aesthetically compromised (discolored, unsatisfactory contour/position)
  • You want to improve your smile

Benefits of dental crowns

When a dental crown is placed on a damaged, decayed or improperly shaped tooth, it helps to:

  • Strengthen the tooth making it more durable
  • Protect the remaining structure of the tooth
  • Provide a longer lasting, more definitive prosthesis compared to fillings
  • Improve the color and shape of the teeth
  • Correct misalignment issues and improve your bite
  • Rebuild a tooth that is severely worn out

Types of dental crowns

The material that is best for a patient will depend on their needs and budget. Dental crowns can be made from metals, porcelain fused to metal, or full ceramic.

Metal crowns offer a strong, long-lasting restoration for areas where aesthetic is not a concern. Advantages include less reduction of tooth structure to fit a full metal crown, its strength and durability, and excellent compatibility with the opposing teeth and your oral tissues (particularly, gold crowns).

In areas where strength is a concern, but a tooth colored crown is preferred, a porcelain fused to metal (PFM), or particular types of full ceramic crowns may be used. PFM has porcelain that is fused with a strong metal core to create dental crowns that are color-matched to your real teeth, with the benefits of a metal substructure. However, unlike a solid metal crown, the bonded porcelain can break or chip due to wear.

Full ceramic crowns are excellent at reconstructing beautiful, natural looking tooth structure, and are often used in smile makeovers. From strong, full contoured zirconia crowns strong enough for molars, to the uncompromising aesthetics of porcelain crowns for your front teeth, full ceramic crowns can meet your aesthetic demands. Custom shading can also be done to seamlessly match your new crown to the neighboring teeth. Talk to our dentist today to help you determine the type of crowns that are ideal for you.

What to expect during the procedure

Your dentist will begin by preparing the tooth and taking an impression of your teeth, which gets sent to the lab for crown fabrication. Until the delivery of the final crown, a temporary crown will be made and inserted. The color of the final crown can either be selected chairside or custom matched at the lab. At a quick second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, and the final crown will be fitted and inserted.

Maintenance

As with any dental restoration, proper care and maintenance is crucial for the longevity of your crown. A tooth that has been crowned should be cared for just like any other tooth, with regular check-up, cleanings, and home hygiene. Just because it is crowned does not mean it can not get cavities or gum disease! In addition, patients with parafunctional habits such as bruxism (teeth grinding) may experience issues such as accelerated wear or more frequent cement debonding of the crown. A night-guard may be recommended to protect your dentition and new restorations.

I am beyond grateful to the staff at the Smiles On Queen. I until the past 6 months had allowed my health and especially my dental health to rapidly decline. I had avoided the dentist for close to a decade and had a lot of fear, shame and embarrassment regarding the state of my teeth. From the moment I entered the office and furthermore on my call to book my appointment I was met with a degree of compassion and understanding that quite honestly has left me overwhelmed. The care, patience and expertise of the hygienist was extraordinary. Additionally the receptionist was equally as kind and understanding. Thank you - you have done so much for my self esteem - I can smile again without having to worry about the appearance of my teeth. I would highly recommend this office to anyone.

I was referred to this office by a friend because they offer IV sedation. I was very anxious at the dentist before but I was able to remove my wisdom teeth and I did not feel pain or discomfort. The dentist Dr. Lawrence was confident and told me what I was to expect afterward in terms of minor swelling and they also told me to come back if I have any problems but I am fine and happy. Overall I am happy this office was able to see me and they are great.

This dental office is staffed with some of the best people you will ever meet. First of all I would like to say that I’m really afraid dentists (I think its dentistophobia 😊), I've been to over 5 different ones with the same negative results from all. My mother is a cancer survivor and suggested that I check out her dental office...so I did. I was greeted by a team of fantastic people concerned with nothing but my well being. These people are angels sent here to help others in a time of difficulty, it is, honestly an absolutely amazing place.

This was by far one of the best dental experiences I've ever had. I have a huge fear of the dentist and was open about my fears upon arrival. Dr. Norsen was kind, caring and catered to my needs and phobia. I 100% recommend this dental facility. I also felt nothing while receiving my fillings and I'm very hard to freeze and had a lot of work that needed to be done. Over all an awesome experience for the dentist.
