Sedation Dentistry

At Smiles on Queen, we strive to offer patients safe and comfortable dental procedures. Sedation dentistry is available to help patients feel relaxed for a more pleasant experience.

Dental anxiety is very common in both adults and children and can unfortunately be one of the biggest deterrents in receiving necessary dental treatment and maintaining a healthy mouth and body. Many adult patients are too embarrassed to admit that they’re anxious or uncomfortable at the dentist, not knowing just how common their phobia is. Thankfully, at Smiles on Queen Dentistry, we have several options safe for adults and children, to put you at ease.

Do you need sedation dentistry?

When you visit your Smiles on Queen dentist, he/she will perform a simple evaluation to determine if sedation dentistry is an ideal solution for you.

Sedation dentistry is often recommended for individuals who have:

  • Fear and anxiety of undergoing dental treatments
  • A difficulty to getting numb
  • A history of trauma during dental procedures
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty opening the mouth
  • Complex dental problems

If you always dread going to the dentist or fail to follow through with your appointment due to fear and anxiety, we may recommend sedation dentistry. Some of our patients require sedation after having a bad experience at the dental clinic as a child. Others simply have an aversion to needles and cannot stand the sight of a dentist performing a procedure while they watch. Do not allow fear to come in the way of proper dental care. For dental treatments that are invasive or lengthy, we perform sedation to ensure the patient is at ease and the procedure is properly done. At Smiles on Queen, we understand your fears and we are ready to do all it takes to ensure your dental needs are met.

Types of Sedation

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, also called “laughing gas” is a quick-acting gas that is delivered through a special nose-mask while the dental work is completed.

Laughing gas is excellent for use in children, because it is safe, effective, has a quick onset, and leaves the body typically within five minutes after the dental work is completed, such that your little one can go back to school and resume their daily activities after their dental appointment.

It is also great for adults who want to be more relaxed during their appointment and greatly decrease their anxiety while still being conscious. Best of all, you can drive yourself home after your procedure, since the gas leaves the body very quickly after it is turned off.

Most insurances will cover nitrous oxide sedation, but if you are unsure about your coverage, our staff will be happy to find out the details for you.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a pill to reduce dental anxiety in adults. Depending on your anxiety level, your weight and your medical history, the doctors at Smiles on Queen will determine the right medication for you and whether you are a candidate for safe oral sedation. You will, however, need a chaperone to escort you home after your dental procedure, since the medication will stay in your body for several hours after it is taken.

Deep Sedation & General Anesthesia

Deep sedation and general anaesthesia, administered intravenously by a licensed dental anaesthesiologist, is an excellent option for:

1) Young children who have extensive dental work, where one appointment to complete everything would be preferable to several appointments, for their mental and emotional well-being. The benefit is that your child will have no memory of their appointment, reducing their risk of developing adulthood dental phobia.

2) Adults and teenagers who have dental phobia or would simply rather not be awake for their procedure!

So whether you are worried that your child will not sit still long enough for their dental procedure to be completed, afraid that a dental appointment will traumatize your child and would rather he be asleep for it, or are having a procedure done yourself and don’t want to lose sleep over it, the option is there to sleep through your whole appointment. You will be safe in the hands of our anesthesiology specialist, and our staff will guide you through every step of the process.

I am beyond grateful to the staff at the Smiles On Queen. I until the past 6 months had allowed my health and especially my dental health to rapidly decline. I had avoided the dentist for close to a decade and had a lot of fear, shame and embarrassment regarding the state of my teeth. From the moment I entered the office and furthermore on my call to book my appointment I was met with a degree of compassion and understanding that quite honestly has left me overwhelmed. The care, patience and expertise of the hygienist was extraordinary. Additionally the receptionist was equally as kind and understanding. Thank you - you have done so much for my self esteem - I can smile again without having to worry about the appearance of my teeth. I would highly recommend this office to anyone.

I was referred to this office by a friend because they offer IV sedation. I was very anxious at the dentist before but I was able to remove my wisdom teeth and I did not feel pain or discomfort. The dentist Dr. Lawrence was confident and told me what I was to expect afterward in terms of minor swelling and they also told me to come back if I have any problems but I am fine and happy. Overall I am happy this office was able to see me and they are great.

This dental office is staffed with some of the best people you will ever meet. First of all I would like to say that I’m really afraid dentists (I think its dentistophobia 😊), I've been to over 5 different ones with the same negative results from all. My mother is a cancer survivor and suggested that I check out her dental I did. I was greeted by a team of fantastic people concerned with nothing but my well being. These people are angels sent here to help others in a time of difficulty, it is, honestly an absolutely amazing place.

This was by far one of the best dental experiences I've ever had. I have a huge fear of the dentist and was open about my fears upon arrival. Dr. Norsen was kind, caring and catered to my needs and phobia. I 100% recommend this dental facility. I also felt nothing while receiving my fillings and I'm very hard to freeze and had a lot of work that needed to be done. Over all an awesome experience for the dentist.
